This module offers a comprehensive look at the stages of development in children and young people, including physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth. It equips learners with the knowledge to recognise typical and atypical developmental milestones, understand how environmental and social factors impact development, and apply this understanding to support individual learning needs within the classroom.

Focusing on the critical area of safeguarding, this module deepens learners’ understanding of child protection policies and procedures. It covers legal responsibilities, signs of abuse and neglect, and the processes for reporting concerns. Learners will explore the role of educational support staff in creating safe environments, ensuring that all actions meet both ethical and legal safeguarding standards.

This module introduces strategies for supporting children and young people who may be bilingual or have special educational needs (SEN). Learners gain insight into inclusive teaching practices, adapting resources to meet diverse needs, and fostering an environment that respects linguistic and cultural diversity. The module covers ways to effectively assist in personalised learning plans (PLPs) and individual education plans (IEPs), empowering students of all backgrounds to thrive.

Good communication is essential in educational support roles, and this module equips learners with the skills to interact professionally with colleagues, students, and parents. Covering both verbal and non-verbal communication, it explores methods for active listening, building trust, and promoting positive relationships in the school environment. Additionally, learners will understand the importance of adapting communication styles to meet the needs of different age groups and settings.

In this module, learners develop the skills to encourage and sustain positive behaviour in educational settings. The focus is on understanding behaviour management techniques, recognising behavioural triggers, and applying interventions that promote a calm and constructive learning atmosphere. Learners will also explore strategies for reinforcing positive interactions and handling challenging behaviours in ways that respect individual needs and encourage self-regulation.

This module introduces methods for self-reflection, encouraging learners to evaluate their own performance and identify areas for improvement. By developing a habit of reflective practice, learners become more effective in their roles, able to adapt to changing needs and integrate feedback constructively.
